Hi,
I saw the posted pictures. I was told by the 24th Div. historian that coming in from the sea that the "actual" landing beach of the 34th Inf. Regt. is several hundred yards to the left of the MacArthur monument location. I recall my dad saying he looked to his right down the beach and he saw the Gen. come ashore, so Red Beach, at least the part the 34th hit is down some. Does this seem correct? Do you know by chance if any trenches or battlefield exits still where the 24th Div. fought?
Thanks,
Bobby

Bobby look at the photos above.. That is Red (Blood) Beach, It is safe if you act like a human.. They will treat you a lot better than we treat people, You will not want to leave.. remember it is not America... not all our unnecessary, sometimes silly conveniences... by the time you get to Carigara even in the Jeepneys and Bikes you’ll think you hiked it.. Stay in Tacloban… Go to MacArthur Park in Palo 1 day then go very, very early to Carigara by tour Bus at the terminal another day.. Remember unless you are retired with money you HAVE TO come back.. You will not want…

My father hit Red Beach 20 Oct. 44 with Co.B, 34th Inf. Regt, 24th Division. Does anyone have pictures of the beach where the 24th Div. came ashore? Are there any battle sites left in the valley up to Carigara, or is it all built over now? Is it safe to visit Leyte and hike the valley all the way to Carigara?
Thanks,
Bobby

My unit 6th Special Naval Construction Batt. Navy Seabees
landed on Samar, Philippine Oct 23, 1944. From my base we
could see Tocloban. My buddy and I used an LCM landing craft to pick up supplies from an army depot. Dropping our ramp
on the beach I walked over to soldiers on Tacloban beach many soldiers had 45 cal. submachine guns when I asked what's going on he said Doug-out-Doug is coming ashore I walked away walking towards my buddy one soldier yelled out Here comes the General. His landing craft can go up to the beach as my buddy did, soon his ramp came down he was the first out and wading towards the beach after shaking many ranking officers hand a jeep and diver arrived we were about 20 feet away from all of this action soon he walking around the front jeep sat in the passengers seat as he past us he was about 1o feet from us we saluted him he returned the Salute the jeep drove a short distance made a right turn up a hill where they disappeared Gen. MacAthur did not land on Oct. 20, 1944 that was D-Day Later I learned he made five such landings. The landing site I'm writing about very close to a white Catholic Church. As we drove by we saw many size caliber holes in the outside walls of that church. Being Catholic we stopped in knelt on concrete floor everything in and around the church was missing no Alter no signs of the stations of cross soon soldiers were carrying in wounded soldiers laying them down on strechers. We finished out prayers and left loaded out jeep into the LCM across the bay almost in a straight line back to Samar. The General didn't land for sometime after D-Day.
the soldiers told us was aboard a Heavy American crusier
General landed two weeks later. I remember there were no large ship near the beach the water was to shallow for LST. Only two landing crafts were the Generals and our LCM. Answering your first question "Why are you here"
We came to liberate you & your country award us Presidential Unit Citation, Philippine Liberatiom Medal w/ star, and Philippine independance Medal, Thank you
