Do you think all this character assassination will stop them from supporting the administration of Mayor Jimmy Ty and working for the community? You are mistaken. I know them personally as principled, morally upstanding people and I have even worked with them in several OLFA alumni affairs and two medical missions (1994 and 1999), and I could speak for them to say that all the more they will help make Mayor Ty's administration more productive and successful so that ex-mayor Luz Japzon's bid for reelection will surely fail. I've known Emma Barata-Gloria since high school days as a head-strong, independent-minded lady. It is these character traits that probably got him into head-on collision with then-chief of hospital Dr. Manuel Japzon, husband of ex-mayor Luz Japzon, over the issue of fraudulent claims on Medicare/PhilHealth patients, a crime that Dr. Japzon had been perpetrating for many years. This was bothering Emma because aside from defrauding the government of millions of pesos, Dr. Japzon was always putting pressure on her as an unwilling accomplice to the crime. With the help of her kin, the late Judge Roberto Navidad, Emma and 4 other hospital workers took Dr. Japzon to court and went to as high as the Ombudsman. But since the Japzons at that time were so influential (Dr. Japzon's sister Tindeng Salazar was the governor then), the case was dismissed despite strong evidence. For keeping their integrity intact and standing up to a formidable corrupt opponent, Emma and the other 4 hospital employees were thrown by Dr. Japzon (with the help of then-governor Salazar) to work in the most isolated hospitals in the province for a year as a punishment. It is most likely this grudge that the Japzons hold against Emma that she is always maligned by the Japzons. (Ironically, the issue of adultery is what Dr. Japzon was publicly pouring out from his heart at the tennis court when Luz Japzon was allegedly having had an affair with an Egyptian doctor while working in Saudi Arabia). Emma's presence in Mayor Ty's most trusted circle is understandably a constant irritant to the Japzons. But would all this defamatory postings stop her from helping Mayor Ty's administation and work against Luz Japzon's reelection bid? Knowing her, no! I met Dr. Dennis Navidad in a social affair in California right before he went home from his successful psychiatry training in the United States and he told me his intention to stay for good in MacArthur because he missed his hometown and wanted to make his services available to the community and to the province which does not have a single psychaitrist. I first worked with him during the 1994 free medical mission, then another time during the 1999 OLFA golden jubilee. His inclinations towards community work was evident during our conversation and I was not surprised when I learned that he volunteered as Mayor Ty's staff for one year (sarcastically called the "little mayor" by political opponents, a name which he relished). He also became active in the OLFA alumni association and voted president, and other civic associations and activities on top of his private practice as a psychiatrist. I also learned that he was a very potent force behind Mayor Ty's successful 2007 election. In fact, he emailed me his campaign speech that cut deep into the hearts of the Japzons. Despite lack of poltical ambitions, he is always perceived as a big threat to the Japzons, so no wonder why he is another favorite target of character assassination. I emailed him immediately after these malicious postings came out and got this response "I cannot stop them from maliciously using my name, but I do not feel compelled to respond to those postings because the THE PERSONS THEY ARE TALKING ABOUT IS NOT ME." Touché. Nita Navidad-Cablao has a long working history as a community builder helping the non-government organizations and people's organization , and I just don't see why all this trash talk would discourage her from making her talents and skills not available for Mayor Ty. She resigned from her job at the municipal hospital way back after she had a rift with then-chief nurse Luz Japzon who was already showing her arrogance as early as that time. (Nurse Sonia Acosta and a few more others, nurse Agnes Acosta, I think - I forgot the others - also resigned for the same reason.) I guess it's no secret that Nita is interested in the position that Mrs. Lita Lactawan vacated, but Luz Japzon blocks it at the Sangguniang Bayan level. Why is that? Aside from Japzon's personal grudges, Nita would be a big asset to Mayor Ty's administration with her ability to organize people for community building, her access to the different government agencies and NGO's that could provide projects to and help improve our town, and her ability to multitask on the different functions in the LGU. Presently Nita she is working for the governor. I'm sure she will do everything to make Japzon's comeback attempt unsuccessful. In summary, these 3 targets of character assassination - Emma, Dr.Navidad and Nita (Dr. Navidad in his email to me refuses to be called a victim because he said it didn't hit him in any way and he doesn't feel affected by it) - have a lot of things in common that are going against the agenda of the Japzons. One: they have a record as dedicated community workers and their success in helping Mayor Ty's projects and good intentions would be a big blow to the Japzons whose aim is to "pagdudunuton ko it MacArthur" (I will make MacArthur go into decay), a verbalization Luz Japzon made after the 2007 elections when she and her husband got trashed. Easy for her to say - she does not have familial roots in our town. She was probably thinking that her no. 7 position among the 8 councilors could prevent Mayor Ty from introducing reforms and improvements in our town. She failed. Two: the 3 of them are among Mayor Ty's most trusted advisers and aides in their different areas of expertise. They are known to work at irregular and ungodly hours when the need arises. The success of Mayor Ty's administration and their role in his 2010 election campaign are big threats to Luz Japzon's attempt to get back in power. Three: it's personal. There is no love lost between them and the Japzons. Emma and her corruption case against the Japzons. Dr. Navidad and his scathing campaign speech against the Japzons. Nita and her resignation from the hospital under Dr. Japzon. Moreover, all of them are Navidads, and for some reason, this biggest clan in MacArthur have a record of not voting Japzon in any election. Dr. Navidad ran the Navidad clan organization as president for many years, now it's Nita Navidad-Cablao's turn. Emma Barata-Gloria is not a Navidad by consanguinity but has a familial affinity to the late Judge Roberto Navidad. Everybody knows that Raul Alday, now in Louisiana, USA, is together with them in this endeavor. As a councilor during Japzon's administration, he was a fierce frontliner in opposing Japzon's abusive and corrupt plans which earned him her everlasting hatred. I guess everyone of them feels his frustration that he is not in the heat of the action. But despite his physical distance, I guess it's pretty obvious that he is one with them in spirit. His positive role in many ways is not visible to most of us these days but the people in Macky that I talked to say there is. It is all these factors that bind Mayor Jimmy Ty, Dr. Dennis Navidad, Emma Barata-Glora, Nita Navidad-Cablao and Raul Alday together. No amount of character assassinations, intrigues and lies by the Japzon camp can tear them apart. On the contrary, all these dirty tricks only make their bond stronger. So I, in solidarity with Mayor Jimmy Ty, Dr. Dennis Navidad, Emma Barata-Glora, Nita Navidad-Cablao and Raul Alday, am calling all the other concerned citizens of Gen. In General McArthur my personal observation is that there are a lot of people that spent their past times to talking at other people’s life. If you are really a true Pambuhanon, for sure your dream is to see our town improving that’s why in my opinion we Pambuhanon should change our attitude and lifestyle by helping each other by educating our fellow Pambuhanon by way of teaching them to help even in a very little way. One example is by simply picking up small garbage that they can see on the streets and also not throw their garbage to the sea or river, and also by explaining to them that even the elected officials from Mayor down to the barangay tanod cannot solve these problems without the town folk’s help. Our town officials should also set example to be a role model by way of avoiding accepting bribes from higher government officials, instead they should initiate to bring the people closer and to be cooperative enough if they really want to improve the lives of everybody in the community. I thought of voicing out my concern by the time I was back to my hometown during my short home leave. My being an OFW in a far away Middle East country put me in a very difficult situation to be involve in the development of the town I love most. A place where I grew up and discover many things. As I move out of my shell and wandered, I discovered a place like home. Along with my maternal origin in Mc Arthur, E. Samar I understand the word “sense of rootedness”. From Manila, we would ride a bus via Philtranco. With its motion sickness and nauseate attack on my 3 brothers, (thank God I got high tolerance) we would asked our mom impatiently “Nanay malayo pa ba?” But the moment we see the arc that says: Pambujan Sur Elementary School, we would jump off the bus as if we were energized. The never ending trip is all worth it! From there, I have tasted foods like kiring, tambis, ganga, sarongsong and the famous palawan, bilanghoy paired with mouth-watering kinilaw budo and paksiw. Really these foods has made my day complete! The striking picture at the house backyard brings back memories of my childhood summer days. At mid dawn we would eat champorado or lugaw. After which we would hang out at the backdoor for the most anticipated swimming at the shore facing Monbon, Matarinao and Minalongon Island. After a lot of pleading, the oldies would let us dip into the water, provided we stayed in sight. We would also make sand castle or sand balls and play ‘bulang’ or catch ‘gukoy’ during ‘hubas’. In the afternoon we would also dash colorful manogbanog at elementary school. And just before bedtime I would always catch ‘bukatkat’, only to get disappointed at dawn because the poor little insect died inside a small container. Time runs so fast that I got so many things to attend to. Loaded with much concerns, there was never a day when I think of how I missed province and of course my grandparents. We fondly call them “Inay and Itay”. For me, they were a figure of integrity and fulfillment. January 24, 2007. While the town lost a responsible citizen and the family a caring father, I lost our Itay. They talk of how he provided and guided his siblings and how he’s eager to improve their craft.. while I remember how he’s proud of my accomplishments, how he appreciates me taking care of them, how he see me like my mom telling me “pareho ka kan im nanay…” Amidst all the “why’s” and “what if’s” that his passing has left us, I just try to find comfort that he deserve a big break for a duty well done, that he is somewhere happier. Itay was nothing less a good man and he has nowhere else to go but Up There.. It hurts to think that we no longer have his hand to hold and give blessings. What gets me through each day is the thought that we would see each other again. Even if only in dreams. As a matter of fact, one of them is just accross from my house in Sto Nino St. Its proprietor is married to Mana Meling Navidads' sister. however there are several others to choose from. I think right along the main highway there are a few and maybe even in other part of the town. I am taga lumbang so dere ako malakat, masyado bangin ngadto a rawis mayada liwat, who knows.
