I have been to Tacloban, and have been many times to Gaisano. I loved every minute of it. I also married a wonderful woman from Tacloban and we plan to return every year to visit with her family who have accepted me as one of their own.

The International Airport in the Philippines doesn't have toilet paper. Only
a water to wash and clean yourself.

I just returned from Tacloban, and visited Gaisano's many times... The locals call it the mall. I found the store a joy to shop in... Everything you could want was available there.... Yes, seems like there was more employees than customers, but that is thier system, it works for them, and you should respect that.... I do. The staff was courteous and helpful, even giving discounts on items.
As far as all the gaurds and police in the city, yep... lots of them.... I counted about 50 per block... Did you not notice that you were safe? The police and gaurds were very courteous and helpful, they also made sure that customers personal firearms were checked in at the entrance of the stores.
Street and sidwalk conditions took a bit of getting used to, but why knock it... just watch your path and step up or down as required at the level changes... The locals sure do not get taxed like we do here for road and sidewalk repairs and construction... revenue is generated from business, and port taxes.
Stay home in Texas where you belong.... I liked Tacloban, and the people. I was very welcome there and made lots of friends.... but then again, I respected them, and thier city, country, and language. The local language was Warey Warey, but they were thrilled that I respected them enough to speak Tagalog with them.
I plan on going back there to live, and have a happy life, maybe with a girl I met.... Hope I don't meet you there... Stay home in Texas, and hang upside down like a Wak Wak ( Bat )
My girl would quickly dispatch beggars, apple, and grape venders with a warning, then a sharp rap from her umbrella.... so no problem there.
At least you didn't turn your nose up at peoples houses,.... but then again.... I bet nobody invited you over.

“Phil from Florida” IS NOT “Phil from Texas”, they are two different people, My husband loves the Philippines so much, especially my hometown, He enjoys travelling in the Philippines and he came up with this idea to put the photos on the internet so people that are all over the world, especially the OFW, who never have a chance to visit their homeplace, can see it, even if just pictures on the internet, And for him the Philippines is one of the most beautiful countries he has ever been in and for him, Filipinos are one of the sweetest and nicest people on earth. Thanks.

Immodium AD is highly recommended for anyone traveling outside the US. Even if you grew up in the area and you left and came back your system has changed. Your body is not the same as it was many years ago. I am sorry you have taken ill from drinking the coffee. One thing you would think you could trust a corparate icon as Ronald, but the corruption and illegallities we cannot help because that was ingrained into our DNA by the spanish of maybe 200 year rule. If only Magellaen kept on that boat and sailed on to India for those spices. Atleast he was put to an end at Mactan but our punishment is the misguided decisions later faced by public officals.

tacloban is a promising city if some of the local politician may not be dictated by corruption, and the constituents will have cooperate for future development of the city.the city is the center of trade and commerce in the region but its business, commercial and shopping feature is not like of what tagbilaran city has.bohol is very small island but accomodated to at least 4 bigger malls, it is because of participation of its populace.bohol has only a million in population whereas region 8 has more than 3 million inhabitants.
just like iligan city,we only have gaisano dept store, forcing our muslim brothers to go to cagayan de oro city since iligan city cannot accomodate them for shopping needs.but now, maybe a couple of months later, the gaisano mall of iligan will be opened.
i hope tacloban in other hand after robinsons place, SM city will follow.

I go to Tacloban every year. I love these place.
Just advice for bad commenters, Travelling is an adventure, never expect it to be just like "home."
Toilet papers and toilet covers are not a common sight in public toilets in the Philippines, thats considered very wasteful, Filipinos wash their asses with soap and water, then shake your wet hand dry if theres no towel.
One things is certain, even if our bathrooms look gross, we don't walk around with stinky butts.
It's a waste of time complaining, wherever you go there are good and bad, when you travel you must expect that and always try to find the good things, coz there are a lot of it.
Tacloban is a nice, friendly, safe and warm.
I see a lot of foreign nationals waking around the street alone, i talked to some,, apparently they live in Tacloban, they chose to retire there.
Tacloban is not bad.
It's not for everyone either.
I hope we all find our own place that we would love.

Usahay may-ada mga tawo nga claro iton subra nga pagka ignorante nga ipinaagi hin halaba nga komentario pareho hiton nag padara hin email nga taga Texas antes ha akon.An
sinisiring ko la nga kon hin-o and diri taga Pilipinas/Tacloban City, ayaw nala kamo pagbisita kon damo pa it iyo mga pagtamay.I have been in the States for 32 years and I am proud to be from Tacloban City.In any other country whether civilized or what they call 3rd world country ( whatever that means )not all houses have all the
amenities that some foreigners are looking for.I am sure in Texas, there are some households or even
restaurants, shopping centers that has dirty restrooms (try the ones in the rest areas). Why is it that some foreigners still try to paint their countries as better than the others.I tell you what.....if you are inconvenienced by the absence of the so called " amenities ", then do not
travel. The Filipinos might not be a rich
group of people.....but we are happy and satisfied in our own way.....and I think we deserve a respect for that.

On the net, the best and cheapest is Cebu Pacific, large planes and on time, about a one and half hour flight. Manila's Domestic Airside 1 to Tacloban.
