I lived for a year in Giuna-ang, Mountain Province 1985-1986. supposedly I was a Peace Corps Volunteer, but I didn't do much as the people there didn't want me to and I respected that. Things were different back then, especially politically. Started off with Marcos and ended with Cory Aquino. Also scary roads, beautiful rice terraces, wonderful older folk still carrying head axes (the men) or carrying massively heavy bundles of vegetation on their heads (the women). Talk about strong. I didn't take many pictures, either, as the people didn't want me to. Every picture I took was in the last two days I was there. And while I was trying very hard to learn the local language, the younger people wanted me to teach them American slang. Since I speak American all the time, I never even stopped to think what just what words were slang. People would politely listen to my efforts to speak Bontoc and as soon as I made a mistake, they'd switch to English. I do remember being taught a few useful phrases such as "ma-id siiping ko" and "awan ti kwartak." (Smile!) Also "chua puo ya enim non tawen ko." Pardon the spelling. I do remember the sound. It's been so long with virtually no practice but I could hold minimal conversations back then. Very minimal. And I did have no money. I read in the comments that someone mentioned the road is now paved? Wow. It was a long, long, scary, dusty way to travel in a non-air/con bus. Did that once, after that I saved up for an air-con bus. I was hardly ever in Bontoc, mostly in Guina-ang, and only travelled through Banaue a few times. Back then the U.S. Military was still around and sometimes they'd vacation by traveling around. It would aggravate me how insensitive and rude they could be with their comments. When they spoke to me, I'd pretend I didn't understand English. Go away, Amerikano. I was glad to see, years later, that the rice terraces are now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. I'll probably never get back to Guina-ang (that's how I was told to spell it way back when....sorry if it's wrong), but I think of it frequently. And I very clearly remember the name of a young man who spent a lot of time with me...sometimes I still think of him, and I've never forgotten him. To be clear, a young man from Guina-ang. He asked me to marry him and I did consider it. HF.

Fantastic! Great Pictures, Great Effort & work. With that said, it would make the site even better with the other great significant tourist interests in near by towns. The Ma-atong of Sadanga and its stone rice terrace to name just two. Anyway the site and pictures bring great memories and the deep pull of homesickness! Hope to come home for visit in very near future. My best and special hugs to my fellow alumni of SVS.

Philippines has beautiful sceneries, but ugly Architecture. The main reason is, Civil Engineers and non-Architects are allowed to practice Architecture in the Philippines. Civil Engineers make the Philippines look 3rd world. They create ghettos/slums instead of communities.

It's nice to see those beautiful pictures of our beloved Bontoc even though their are some beautiful spots that were not included it doesn't matter. What a beautiful place but your definition of some pictures are really wrong and a quit insulting! It's not good to read your comment that our province is the poorest province! Your welcome to visit our place as for now and see the place that you are pitying off! You are talking about PHILIPPINE PHOTO GUIDE and now it seems you are disappointing those visitors with that comment and pictures you've posted. Traffic enforcers and sari2 stores even those ladies and that kid. Is that a guide nor a spot to be seen? haist! Mainit hot spring, sadanga fua-ash falls and their ma-atong and their caves are not included even. Your captures are not that good!

THE ATO? the rice fields ? . hehe. pls. add more. not contented with the pics. :)

Well I must say the site was very interesting to say the least. I traveled as far as baguio on one visit there and found the area extremely nice and comfortable. I am very eager to again visit there and plan on doing so for a much longer visit to explore some of the mountain province and possibly even buy a retirement place there. Hopefully all these dreams can become a reality and I too will know the beauty that is the mountain province.

Thank you for taking the time to visit Bontoc. It is nice to know you've had a wonderful experience and that you are helping the local tourism industry through this site. However, I would like to point out the following incorrect captions: 1. The Igorot lady is carrying, NOT vegetables, but camote leaves ("ange" in the Bontok language) intended for pigs. 2. We do not "cook the chicken with the torch". The blowtorch is used to burn the feathers in preparation for pinikpikan, a local dish using chicken and "etag" or cured/salted meat. 3. The All Saints' Cathedral is not the only one in Bontoc. There is another one, the Sta. Rita Cathedral by the St. Vincent's High School. I hope you will correct these captions. Thank you very much. Cheers!

Bontoc is a nice and beautiful place. I remember when I went in the year 1981 to conduct training/seminar at Minsitry of Public Works and Highways drivers and operators. It was a big feast given (Engr. Ernesto Reyes), RES, BOE. Also, I remember a Foreman from the District Office who gave me a stone to be used to sharpen bolos or knives. Also, another Foreman from Halsema Road that gave use sacks of Potatos and cabbages going home to La Union. . Those were the days I was in Region I, MPWH, RES, BOE. I learned also a song from one of the employee with the title of the song"Nan Layad Nen Likatan" which I can still remember to sing the lyrics. I will always sing that song if there ar Diversity activities in the United States. Is there any CD for this song? On our way to Bontoc before it was raining and our car hasd a problem and one family approaching Bontoc offer their help and hospitality and we went to their house dring the mountain tea. It was so good. My campanion that time were Mr. Filemon Caoile and Ignacio dela CruZ of DPWH, Bauang La Union, Region I. Thank you so much. Those were the memories in my visit to Bontoc. These are all nice pictures which we can treasures as a remembrance in visiting Bontoc. I hope when I go back to the Philippines I can visit Bontoc again. regards to all Employees of RES, BOE, DPWH, Bontoc, Mt. Province.

The pictures are great but only shows a small part of Bontoc or the Mt. Province for that matter and there are much to discover. My Dad is from Samoki thou I hate to admit it I have only been there about three times and I plan to change that soon. I have fond memories of the place, the food (pinikpikan with inasin will always be number one to me) and how warm the people there, heck I even have an Isamoki name "Wakat". What I like most about the place is the Ifontoc Culture that is very much alive and I hope it continues to be so even with the onset of progress. Try a family picnic on the banks of the Chico it will be a great experience or try the mountains just watch your rubbish please. I just hope the authorities find away to make traveling there a lot easier I mean the Mountain Trail on its current state please! The people of Mt. Province Deserve better!

Good afternoon. Although I am not a native of this place, Bontoc, I used to be there I think twice, to accompany a friend of mine who was working with the Department of Agriculture. During my 2-3 days stay there, I hadn't had the chance to explore the place. But thank you for the pictures you've posted. Hi I am looking for a man by the name of Jayson Jinggoy Fakat Rupinta....I havent spoken to him in a while and as far as I know he graduated in the adminsitration of jusitice...we were sweethearts and planned a future together but all that came to a halt due to my family...but I want to get in touch with him again and see how everything is going...I miss him terribly and since I am so far its hard to simply go to Bontoc and see how he is doing...he might be in baguio since he is part of the police academy now but I really want to know what he is doing now...and if he is safe....if anyone knows ANYTHING AT ALL please email me...i would be most appreciative...he was my first love and its hard to not talk to him....

hi... the pitures are great eventhough the way they are taken is not quite good. Bontoc is really improving very fast that sometimes you cannot already imagine how was it look like before, not only the structures that are changing but also the people itself. whatever the things we observe in Bontoc is part of how we constructed our reality as Ifontoks, remember that ure is constructed and this construction is shared by the community, so changing this reality takes a very slow and long process since it is already part of our system. for the people who says that ifontoks are boastful, please reflect on what basis you say that we are boastful and reflect also on the lifestyle of the ifontoks in relation with the term "boastfult." thankz... anyways, thankz MS. Loida for the pictures, i really love it....

Every where in the world have boastful people. Bontoc is our place. Why criticize? Much better to motivate them positively rather than insisting boastful words without doing something. Bontoc someday will become a first class town that we can be proud of.

Peoples in Bontoc are really boastful and I will not retrieve my statement regarding that matter. Though not all were of that kind, majority of them was. This is not to insult the people living in Bontoc because I myself is an "ifontoc". This is for us to change our bad attitudes and it's purpose is to remind us that we are being judje as such. It is not just people from the Cordilleras who are saying this but also people from other parts of the Philippines. Yes it's true that we are real nice peoples, we cater tourists coming to our place with soooo much hospitality, but we should also observe and improve this bad things which are obvious to us. TY

To my fellow kakailyans who said that we ifontok are boastfull are totally wrong.Pls. do not judge everybody through the wrong doings of the few people you meet.Keep in mind that Every place is not being occupied by perfect people. We here in Canada are proud of being an Ifontok.Anyway, many thanks to you Loida for posting some of the pictures of Bontoc since we are using some of it in our programs and magazine. If you don't mind, pls. take some more pictures like the view of plaza, capitol, museum, catholic church, ato, and the chico river.I agree with one those who comment here that the way you took some pictures are not that good. carry on!! and goodluck.

I would just like to comment on Mr. Marlon Chadsi-ing's comment regarding the bontoc people being "boastful". i would just like to say some may be "boastful" but let us not generalize as not all those i-fontoks are "boastful"...... i am a native of bontoc and i'd say that most are humble....... even the richest people there don't boast of their riches but would rather live as ordinary people...... try to visit the barangays where the natives are located and you will see evidence of what i see.... thank you and have a nice day

Loida, thank you so much for your pics. My family left bontoc in the 60's and I have never gone back to visit. I never realized that it has changed so much. I do not even recognize the streets and samoki anymore. We used to go strolling to the river via a wooden bridge! I cannot believe the growth and feel so bad for so much natural beauty that has been destroyed. I guess we have to pay for the progress. After living in the USA for 40 years I hope to visit soon and see some old timers if they are still around. Thank you again. the pics really made me want to visit and will definitely stay at the hotel where you guys stayed. Although if you go back soon, I wish that you would take pics of the catholic church and school on the other side of town, I heard the old church and high school burned down. thanks and regards to your family.

As always been, I consider myself "Ifontok" I was curious to see how the place looks like at this time. I was surfing the net looking for pics and it lead me to your site. The place looks very different than before. Some of those beautiful rice fields were gone and tall buildings and houses have taken over their place. I'm wondering if the CHICO River was the same very beautiful, clean and clear Chico River where I used to frequent during those days. I think progress should not be at the expense of neglecting the preservation of the natural beauty of the place. Thanks for the pics.

Thank you for visiting our place. If have noticed, Bontoc is a blend between its Igorot heritage and the modernism that is inevitable. Visit Bontoc again!
