Aside from the majestic view our nativeland can offer, one of the reasons why foriegners were awed by their visit was the simplicity of life they witness along the way. A well closely-knitted family working together is a rare sight on their home country. Truely, there's a magic this place can bring to any one who ought to visit. I have pass this way a hundred times or more, and it keeps luring me back. for the more human among us, these sentiment is common. for the unenlightened one, its just another highway or another boring trip.

been away for 2 decades, visiting every now and then. seems like the longer you stay away from your birth place the more you long for it. sad to see the pine trees disappear at a very fast pace. these trees are one of the things that make us long for home and above all the reason why we have water in the highlands. i hope somebody will do something about this.please..people who has the power to say," we have to this for us and our children". are we going to be the next to go after the dinosaurs? i want to do something but i'm powerless. anybody?somebody? i'll help!

Me and my family(my wife and my four kids,..17,12,11,11)drove from Baguio City to Lepanto Benguet using our 6-month old manual but all-power Rio2008-Kia last March 2009. It was a real experience. Those who love driving should try t. It was great...It was an adrenaline pumping experience. With those very sharp turns and very steep up and down roads and turns, plus the awesome sceneries,it's a must for those who loves thrill in driving. Overtaking other vehicles through the 2-lane road adds up to the experience and thrill. From Baguio City to Mnagkayan, Lepanto Benguet, it took us 3 and a half hours to complete the trip, despite our load of clothings, toiletries, 4-gallon water, food, kitchen and dining utensils and an LPG tank, and some electronic gadgets like laptop, and despite the fact that I haven't had a sleep for the last 24 hours because we came all the way from Caloocan, to Subic, to Baguio. But on our way back to Baguio, it took us only hours because it was already 5pm when we left Mangkayan. I was so afraid of bandits along the way(because, on our way to Mangkayan, we saw a guy snatched a motorcycle from a couple), that is why I tried to drive faster than I did earlier on our way to Mangkayan. We overtook many vehicles like sedans and AUVs who tried to race with us who amazingly eventually were left behind along uproads and sharp turns. I'm so glad I experienced driving through Benguet. And I'm glad Rio-Kia did not stalled us a bit. And we only consumed around 66 liters of unleaded gasoline for that almost 900 kilometer trip. Benguet is a beautiful place. The sceneries are great. It is there where you will find the highest highway in the Philippines. It is there where you will see breathtaking roads. And the people are very friendly. It' was nice to see children there who have rosy cheeks. My wife and my eldest daughter doesn't want to go back there,..but I'm sure I'll be back there again for that exciting driving experience. I hope you could join me.louie0894@yahoo.com

It was during the late 1990's & early 2000 I frequented the Halsema higway. Inspired by "hitch-hiker-type-of-travel" the way some westerner's do, I opt to travel that way for more fun, hence I became familiar with almost all the curves, rise & descend & of course the majestic view that can be seen in all angle. The trip would be most enjoyed by having a stop or two to sip coffe at Mornings Star Restaurant in Sayangan, or eat sumptous beef stew in Natubleng chain of highway restaurant, have a chat with lovely igorot waitresses with pink cheeks ( no make-up, oh boy they can make you lie about yourself), then hop in the bus playing John Denver's country songs. You can almost draw parallel lines between the landscape scenes flashed before your eyes each time the bus negotiate a curve or a descent, revealing another marvelous site, or to yourself contemplating on the travel, whether a home coming or a visit to a friend. During the months of December until February, when the weather is cool & permits a clear athmosphere, one will be awed by the site overlooking Loo Buguias & its sorroundings including the the mthological ( but existing) Agno river. Every time I travel this way, I always thought that the gods must live in this place, & when they leave, they have left remnants of their belongings for us to see & rever. Half of which can be seen in those pictures. The other half can be felt by the heart. - once you pass this way.

To Phil and Partner Thank you for posting these stunning views of the unending mountain ranges being kissed by clouds as you travelled the long winding curvy road to reach "Heaven"in our beautiful, green, bountiful Benguet. In 1987,my daughter ask me as we gasp the cool fresh mountain air on the highest peak on Halsema road,"how many more mountains do we have to cross to get to Grandma" we were only going to Abatan, Buguias.I feel homesick while going over and over the breathtaking sceneries. I pray you enjoyed your trip to our amazing country.

Great pix you got there guys! I drove and travelled the whole stretch of Halsema Highway-it's exhalarating! I have travelled the world many times and realized that I still have lots of place to explore in the Phils most esp. these places where our brother Igorots lives. Now I spend my long holidays in Benguet (Paoay in Sayangan in particular). I have gained lots of friends from there. by the way you missed the pure white calla lily in Atok- i think you can only find perfect white calla lilies in these particular place because this is where the temp. is at its coldest being situated at the very top of the province. Atok reminds me of my post graduate days as a student in one of the language schools in zurich, switzerland. the philippines should start introducing this place as an alternate destination not only for foreigners but for us filipinos in particular because sad to say that a lot of Filipinos are so ignorant of their own place!!! Lots of caves and burial place to be explored but we should not desecrate the place. hiking trails are spectacular! I really really love the place!

TO: Phil & Loida; Very interesting indeed. I don't know what to say, but to THANK BOTH OF YOU for the wonderful PHOTOS of Benguet Province. It is also where I was born and raised. It brings back lots of thoughts and memories. After end of school in Baguio, I used to hangout at Burnham Park during carnival activities around the months of March thru May I think. Before I go on, I would like to have the privilege to say something first to my countrymen of Benguet by means of our own native tongue. "KAILI-AN ED KAPANGAN YA ED BUGUIAS SAPAY KOMA-TA- NA-RAD-SAK DI KA-BE-BEYAG YO AY AM IN." Long live Benguet, Long live my fellow KAN-KA-NA EYS. I was born in a remote village in Kapangan and went to elem and High school in Baguio City. So far was my only highest attainment. Although a visit in 1985 was short, the city that I grew up and knew then completely changed. And now those great pictures you posted can tell a crowded streets, heavy traffic, etc justifies. Somehow still Baguio City they say a HOT SPOTs nationwide. Heading north towards Bontoc, you happened to stop in Abatan, Buguias. A small town that has tripled its population over the years thru influx of outsiders, etc. It is where my parents decided to settle permanently. I spent some of teenage days or years there in the MID 1960's. Looking at those photos "I just rest my case."Before I left for good, there were several houses scattered along the road. My parents' house still remained in place. No one lives there and 2 tombs at the back is my dad and a younger brother. Fortunately our neighbor we trust watches the house. The house is located about 100 yards away from the market that is above the road. Before then and now I can't still convinced myself if I consider the place, a home sweet home. I wish to keep on, but I think its time to end it this way: KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK...BRAVO ZULU...again thanks...

Hi, I was born in Manila at the time of the Japanese occupation. My family and I then spent two years in the Los Banos POW camp. After the war, we came back to the US for two years and then, as my dad (Gus) was a mining engineer, we moved back to the Atok Gold mine before settling in Manila for a couple of more years. We moved back to the States in 1950. I hope all is well with you and, someday hope to visit. I have fond thoughts of the people of the Philippines!
