My mother is a native of Leyte. Her ancestry goes back to one of the original pioneers families of Bato, the Germanos. During the Spanish regime, Bato was a coastal community whose main livelihood is fishing and farming. Most of the commerce would flow through the Merkado. Farmers would bring in their livestock and harvest from their farms as fishermen would hand their daily catch to their vendors at the fish market. You can still see this today. During the Spanish/American war, Bato(I believe which was not a town yet), was one of the last barangays to submit to the Americans along with Hilongos because their close spanish influence. The Americans,as part of the deal of the surrender, helped build dirt and gravel roads that shaped up the blocks of the present Bato. They also helped establishing our local public school system where education had become a right of every citizen and not only for the privileged. Fast forward to present...More schools have now popped up and Bato has produced tens of thousands of educated citizens and only to lose them to other neighboring cities and countries. Unfortunately, if not for 2 or 3 new roads, the only same roads that were built by the American are the only roads in Bato. Sewer system and flood control were invented by the Romans along time ago but the technology has evolved since. I have seen several open canals on the sides of some streets and some none at all. No wonder I hear so many Denge stories everytime I visit the Philippines. One dawn, as I was leaving for Tacloban, I found myself on a pitch dark street on my way to the main streets to catch my ride. Only guide I had was, I can see from afar an early morning prayer procession with their candles. If I was a stranger, someone could have jumped me without me even knowing it. Bato is a beautiful town reach of history and natural resources. I'm very proud of its natural heritage as well as its cultural heritage just like Cebu. If we can count on our local government officials to build more roads, sidewalks, curbs and gutters, cover the canals and build sewer lines & storm drain systems and light up the streets, preserve its tourist's attraction, I'll guarantee you more businesses will come, young citizen will get the chance to work on their hometown. Hospitals, factories and manufacturing companies will follow suit. Bato can even have their own IT Park and shopping mall one day and the town will grow into a city. Then, no one will ever want to leave Bato...
