Dapitan is historical place. It reminds us about the life of our great hero Dr. Jose P. Rizal. However, in economic side, majority of people are poor, while politicians are rich. It becomes a business center of the politicians!!!!!

i also went to rizal shrine, and as i imagine what kind of place is it going back 1893-1896, so lonely place, unlike now, its now sorrounded w/ houses.I even climb the place where rizal and josephine have a date on a very trekky mountain, we were greeted by monkeys, overlooking dapitan city

I am 57 yrs. old. Sooner or later will now exit this world. It's very sad to say that being a Filipino it's a shame you can't even take a look at a beautiful and meaningful place like DAPITAN which is on your own country, considering it's been a part of our national hero's life. Lucky for the privilege for they have the means to look at it personally, for us thanks na lang for the web.

DAPITAN CITY, Philippines, This city is no longer just a fitting place for reminiscing the life that the country’s national hero, Dr. Jose Rizal, had spent while in exile here. It has transformed, as well, into a perfect place for having fun and beautiful place. The country’s newest place for fantasies and for remembering the kid within the person, as it welcomes visitors and their imaginations with fun-filled entertainments.

I've been there last November 28, 2009 with my schoolmates when we participated the MASCUF ( Mindanao Association of State College and Universities Foundation, Inc. ) I was there to compete for vocal solo competition. My piece, being part of the mechanics was an old song which marked the art of the past with regards to music. So, my song was a kundiman , entitled "Kundiman ng Luha" composed by Nicanor Abellardo. Now, to linked this from the past, I'd really made a wonderful contribution a being a Filipino who just appreciate the songs of the past. Well, I've find my performance really great through the warm applause of the audience. I was being inspired and being grateful to my school for sending me there to join. Of course, if I was not, I could really miss that wonderful opportunity to sing and to extend my talent in singing as well. Imagine afterward, I with my team had gone to that very relaxing place, RIZAL SHRINE... oh my, what a nice view it was? As I've seen the galleries above, it was really true, the pictures of the view. I couldn't imagine that we've gone in that place with just a very heavy cause! But see, it was just being followed by unexpected tour! How great.... In view of my event, the song itself, well maybe... even Jose Rizal was very fond to sing that song, kundiman! Wow, very spectacular... that journey was one which I should never forget. I'd really love that place and somehow someday, I'll be back to Dapitan, Zamboanga Del Norte to meet Jose Rizal again, I mean his place... Well, that would be the great experience which was once happened into my life! Thanks to Allah... the one and only God! And thank you also for giving time to read my blog! I just hope you go can there too...

Rizal’s unfinished map You can imagine how elated Jose Rizal must have felt when his former professor at the Ateneo Municipal, Fr. Francisco de Paula Sanchez, was sent to Dapitan. A couple of days after Rizal founded La Liga Filipina in Manila, in August, 1892, he was unceremoniously “deported” to Dapitan, a primeval nook farthest from Western civilization. A professor of rhetoric, geometry, French, Latin and Greek, agronomy and surveying, he was Rizal’s teacher from 1875-1876. He arrived in the hinterlands of Dapitan with trunks full of books which his intellectually starved pupil must have avidly devoured. Needless to say, the erudite company of a humanist like Sanchez made Rizal’s exile a tad more bearable and their friendship deepened as they planned and carried out scientific projects for the benefit of Dapitan. Rizal wrote the good news to Ferdinand Blumentritt and years later, Fr. Sanchez himself gave eloquent testimony to “…their similarity of interests and great admiration for the abilities and accomplishments…” of his former pupil. According to Fr. Sanchez’s account, from October to November, 1892, Rizal and he planned and made a relief map of Mindanao at the public plaza of Dapitan. The fact that it has survived wars of conquest and centuries of unrest is indelible testimony that the infrastructure project was not only up to the highest standards but sustainable as well because it was a community activity, not just a project of two outsiders. Aside from books, Fr. Sanchez brought with him surveying equipment as he intended to make plans and maps of Dapitan and its environs. Rizal was an “agrimensor y perito tasador de tierras” (land surveyor and assessor) who got his license on March 31, 1878. The Dapitan military governor happily approved the Rizal-Sanchez proposal to “landscape” the plaza, put in place waterworks and other scientific projects. The original plan was to make a map of the Philippine archipelago, showing the most important islands, starting with Mindanao. They surveyed the plaza and divided this into eight squares, using as a model an ethnographic map owned by the Jesuits. They drew a “cuadricula” or grill pattern in each of the squares and traced the shape of Mindanao with big stones and earth carried to the spot by laborers supplied by Carnicero. Once the rocky foundations were in place, a carpet of grass was laid and as a final touch, ornamental plants and flowers which Fr. Sanchez wrote, “…dieron mas lindo aspecto a la fantastica isla de Mindanao…” They worked assiduously for three months, molding, shaping earth and stone under the hot tropical sun and to show his appreciation, Carnicero would generously send them and the workers food and drink, and cigarettes. Unfortunately, before they could start with Luzon, Fr. Sanchez was recalled by his superiors. It must have been a cruel blow to Rizal to lose his professor, friend, and intellectual ally. He gave Fr. Sanchez emotive departure honors with a band of young musicians who played happy tunes and released a “globo aerostatico” (balloon) as the boat sailed away. Sanchez left in April, 1893 and Jose Rizal was probably too depressed to finish the relief map of the Philippine archipelago.

Rizal’s bakhaw formula You will probably agree that Jose Rizal’s most depressing poem is “Mi Retiro,” written shortly after he arrived in Dapitan, which must have seemed like a veritable hinterland after his sojourn in Western Europe. But Rizal never wasted time wallowing in his personal tragedies. He always embarked on projects that would redound to the good of his fellow Filipinos. In Dapitan, he left a legacy that Zamboanguenos cherish to this day. Aside from installing a waterworks system, a clinic and a school, he made a relief map of Mindanao at the public plaza which has become, Dapitan’s must see destination. Not many of us know that with the encouragement of his former Ateneo professor, Fr. Francisco de P. Sanchez, who was assigned to Dapitan, Rizal came up with a paste made of bakhaw ( bakawan) which could have been used for construction material suitable to these tropical climes. Noting Rizal’s interest in that mangrove plant, Fr. Sanchez lent him the “Historia de Filipinas,” authored by fellow Jesuit Juan Jose Delgado, where on page 589 mentioned that local carpenters make a pasty substance with the bakhaw fruit and use this to fill in and smoothen the imperfections of wood. Intrigued by what he had read, Rizal began to experiment with the bakhaw to see if it could become hard enough to carve and mold into particular shapes. According to Fr. Sanchez, after a few days, he received a rather triumphant note from his ex-pupil starting with “Eureka!,” claiming that he had discovered the formula for bakhaw paste. This is how I did it, Rizal wrote, “with a knife I peeled the fruit and boiled the pulp until the water turned reddish and while it was still hot, I mashed the pulp, mixing it with a little lime water to make a water-resistant paste.” Significantly, at note, written with a pencil as he had ran out of ink, was dated 30 December 1892. In a report to his superiors, Fr. Sanchez said Rizal made several sculptural studies using the bakhaw paste. He molded figurines, frames, tiles and observed that the bakhaw paste or masilla had three properties that made it ideal for tile roofing; it’s water resistant, fireproof and very light in weight. Their next project was about potable water.

I've been in Rizal's Shrine last February 27 - March 01, 2009 during our educational field trip of Southern Christian College. What makes me impressed on the place was its clean surroundings and well constructed roads (almost all their roads are cemented); the people there are so kind and accommodating; and most of all, the absence of traffic. My experiences in Rizal's Shrine is the most meaningful because for me it's a privilege to visit the place where our national hero lived. Thanks to Sir Garry A. and Ma'am Silvano for planning the said field trip.

Zamboanga del Norte envisions to be a tourism capital DEVELOPMENT projects in the province of Zamboanga del Norte, aimed at making the province a tourism center, are underway. Zamboanga del Norte Governor Rolando Yebes said three new hotels are under construction. Three of which are located in Dipolog City, the province' capital, and one in Dapitan City. Yebes said the hotels, once completed, could accommodate the number of tourists in the province. He said an integrated bus terminal, a golf course and a casino will also be constructed next year to lure tourists into the province. Yebes is optimistic that Zamboanga del Norte could become the tourism capital, citing it is very accessible by plane and boat from key cities in the country. He said Dipolog City will soon have four flights daily from Manila and other flights that connect other cities in the country. At present, there are two major air carriers plying the Manila-Dipolog City route and vice-versa. Also, Dipolog City is just three hours by boat from Dumaguete City and four hours from Cebu City. The ferries traveling to the two cities in the Visayas region have a 24-hour trip. Zamboanga del Norte, which has two cities and 25 towns that are clustered into three congressional districts, is bounded on the north and west by the Sulu Sea, on the east by Misamis Occidental, and on the south by Zamboanga del Sur. The province occupies a total land area of 6,618 square kilometers. It has an average elevation of 243.8 meters, with Mt. Dabiak in Katipunan town as the highest peak at 2,600 meters. Other parts near the coastlines are plains and the province's irregular coastline runs 400 kilometers from north to south. Dubbed as the "Twin-City Province," Zamboanga del Norte has been made famous by the beauty and charm of the Orchid City of Dipolog and the historical, rustic quaintness of the Shrine City of Dapitan. Dapitan City is where the country's National Hero Dr. Jose Rizal spent fruitfully his last four years in exile from 1892 to 1896. The original estate of Dr. Rizal in Dapitan has been declared a national shrine and is being administered by the National Historical Institute. Zamboanga del Norte is equally famous for Dakak Beach, the province's foremost natural attraction. The very popular Dakak Beach is most known for its beautifully shaped cove and powdery white sand. It is also known as a diving mecca in Mindanao. Pristine blue waters, excellent dive sites with an abundance of coral reefs, and a magnificent sunset horizon characterize this tropical eden. Dakak Park and Beach Resort boasts 15 hectares of wooded land, a natural reservoir for native plants and animals, and a 750-meter private white-sand beach. Dipolog City is also famous as the producers and supplier of bottled sardines and sweet mangoes. Yebes said the companies that run two of the largest and known shopping malls in the country are now scouting for lots where to construct malls. Yebes is optimistic that the province of Zamboanga del Norte could be a tourism capital with all the natural habitat and developments underway.

On September 21, 1892 the mail boat Butuan was approaching the town of Dapitan carrying a Lottery ticket No. 9736 jointly owned by Captain Carnicero, Dr. Rizal and Francisco Equilior (Spanish resident of Dipolog, a neighboring town of Dapitan) won the second prize of P20,000 in the government-owned Manila Lottery. Rizal's share of the winning lottery ticket was P6,200, He gave P2,000 to his father and P200 to his friend Basa in Hong Kong and the rest he invested well by purchasing agricultural lands along the coast of Talisay about one kilometer away from Dapitan. Rizal's winning in the Manila Lottery reveals an aspect of his lighter side. He never drank hard liquor and never smoked but he was a lottery addict.

On December 29, 1896, Rizal is found guilty of establishing illegal organizations and of supporting and inciting to the crime of rebellion, and is condemned to death. He spends his last 24 hours in his death cell where he receives members of his family and writes his letter of farewelle first one to his "second brother ' Ferdinand Blumentritt. Rizal gives his sister, Trinidad, an old petroleum lamp and whispers to her in English that there is something inside the lamp. Thus is Rizal's famous farewell poem "Ultimo Adios", (Last Farewell) is found. This poem has so far been translated into more than 100 languages. A new German version by the Austrian, Dr. Wilhelm Muster, was made in December 1982 through the initiative of the Austrian Ambassador, Dr. Friedrich Posch and was presented to the National Historical Institute in a ceremony in Fort Santiago

The Last Poem Farewell, my adored Land, region of the sun caressed, Pearl of the Orient Sea, our Eden lost, With gladness I give you my Life, sad and repressed; And were it more brilliant, more fresh and at its best, I would still give it to you for your welfare at most. On the fields of battle, in the fury of fight, Others give you their lives without pain or hesitancy, The place does not matter: cypress laurel, lily white, Scaffold, open field, conflict or martyrdom's site, It is the same if asked by home and Country. I die as I see tints on the sky b'gin to show And at last announce the day, after a gloomy night; If you need a hue to dye your matutinal glow, Pour my blood and at the right moment spread it so, And gild it with a reflection of your nascent light! My dreams, when scarcely a lad adolescent, My dreams when already a youth, full of vigor to attain, Were to see you, gem of the sea of the Orient, Your dark eyes dry, smooth brow held to a high plane Without frown, without wrinkles and of shame without stain. My life's fancy, my ardent, passionate desire, Hail! Cries out the soul to you, that will soon part from thee; Hail! How sweet 'tis to fall that fullness you may acquire; To die to give you life, 'neath your skies to expire, And in your mystic land to sleep through eternity! If over my tomb some day, you would see blow, A simple humble flow'r amidst thick grasses, Bring it up to your lips and kiss my soul so, And under the cold tomb, I may feel on my brow, Warmth of your breath, a whiff of your tenderness. Let the moon with soft, gentle light me descry, Let the dawn send forth its fleeting, brilliant light, In murmurs grave allow the wind to sigh, And should a bird descend on my cross and alight, Let the bird intone a song of peace o'er my site. Let the burning sun the raindrops vaporize And with my clamor behind return pure to the sky; Let a friend shed tears over my early demise; And on quiet afternoons when one prays for me on high, Pray too, oh, my Motherland, that in God may rest I. Pray thee for all the hapless who have died, For all those who unequalled torments have undergone; For our poor mothers who in bitterness have cried; For orphans, widows and captives to tortures were shied, And pray too that you may see your own redemption. And when the dark night wraps the cemet'ry And only the dead to vigil there are left alone, Don't disturb their repose, don't disturb the mystery: If you hear the sounds of cittern or psaltery, It is I, dear Country, who, a song t'you intone. And when my grave by all is no more remembered, With neither cross nor stone to mark its place, Let it be plowed by man, with spade let it be scattered And my ashes ere to nothingness are restored, Let them turn to dust to cover your earthly space. Then it doesn't matter that you should forget me: Your atmosphere, your skies, your vales I'll sweep; Vibrant and clear note to your ears I shall be: Aroma, light, hues, murmur, song, moanings deep, Constantly repeating the essence of the faith I keep. My idolized Country, for whom I most gravely pine, Dear Philippines, to my last goodbye, oh, harken There I leave all: my parents, loves of mine, I'll go where there are no slaves, tyrants or hangmen Where faith does not kill and where God alone does reign. Farewell, parents, brothers, beloved by me, Friends of my childhood, in the home distressed; Give thanks that now I rest from the wearisome day; Farewell, sweet stranger, my friend, who brightened my way; Farewell, to all I love. To die is to rest.

Good News For Dapitan City "President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo recently signed the conversion of Pulauan Port in Dapitan City into Port Management Office (PMO). She added "the Pulauan port deserves the honor to become a PMO because I'm also a witness to the increasing traffic at the port." Making the port a PMO gives it autonomy and thus allows it to have its own budget. It also means independence from the administrative jurisdiction of the Philippine Ports Authority (PPA) in Cagayan de Oro City." This will open up more opportunity for the City of Dapitan.

Indeed a big leap of tourism traffic in Dapitan City. This was noted by most of the tourism publication all over the philippines: The Effect of RORO-- Strong Republic Nautical Highway Transport: "A 46 percent decrease was also noted on the freight and passenger cost of electronics from Manila to Cebu; motorcycle from Manila to Dumaguete by 47 percent; and passengers from Batangas to Calapan by 32 percent. The tourism industry has directly benefited as well from the Strong Republic Nautical HIghway, "compared to 2003 (when the Strong Republic Nautical Highway, inaugurated) the latest statistics indicates: tourists bound for Boracay grew more than 50 percent, Iloilo by 30 percent, Bacolod by 15 percent, and Dapitan by 200 percent." THe system has also slashed the travel time from Mindanao to Luzon from 36 hours to 24 hours." I can actually Drive all the way to Dapitan from Manila in 24 hours? Wow I will be trying this route with my family this summer.

Wow DAPITAN CITY IS GETTING POPULAR for the tourist. I am convinced to visit DAPITAN CITY as soon as I have the time. An article recently published . "In Dapitan, which I said in the beginning we were practically forcing shipping lines to ply that route, now has nine trips a day. Tourism last year went up by a whopping 200 percent coming through the RO-RO. These are just a couple of examples to say that the ultimate beneficiaries of RO-RO are the people. Indeed, RO-RO is the fulfillment of our vision based on a strong and growing economy. It is the fulfillment of one of the ten points in my ten-point program that I announced in 2004 that we would link the whole country by transportation and digital infrastructure. So to all stakeholders today, let us continue to flesh out our vision. Let us continue to keep our sleeves rolled up. Let us continue to join hands. And to the rest of the Philippines -- "Biyahe na, Sakay na!" Wow 200% tourism increase in "DAPITAN CITY" --- There must be something exciting at this place. I will be checking the internet for Pension House's at this place, then I will pack my bag and visit this place.

I am of course a Filipino with a western family name due to marriage. My maiden name is Villareal, very Spanish due to our history. First of all I like to say thank you for sharing those wonderful photos of Rizal's life in Dapitan, Zamboanga, Minadanao, Philippines. It was very nostalgic to see the photos as well as educational and informative of the kind of life Rizal and the people had at that particular time. I enjoyed it tremendously and it made me think how great a person he was and what a waste of young life, such talents, such skill prematurely ended due to the injustices and unfairness of the Spanish leaders in his time. I am a great admirer of Jose Rizal and also to the many Filipinos who had suffered and died to give us the freedom we now enjoy. Again, thank you for sharing your wonderful photos to a lot of Filipinos.

I would like to suggest to list all the students of our hero Jose Rizal. Since this is a legend, therefore we acknowledge also their centennial past. Thanks

It was great to get to go here with Loida as Rizal is her Hero and Idol, The Monuments and grounds are keep in very good shape, sure hope these photos help all those who can't come to get an idea of where Rizal was exiled to from 1893-1896.
